What is a standing seam roof and what pitch does it need?
A standing seam roof is made of narrow bays of sheet metal joined by a folded, mechanically closed seam that stands proud of the roof surface. In a single-lock seam the edges of two bays are folded over once; in a double-lock seam they are folded twice, giving a joint with far greater resistance to wind-driven rain and to capillary rise. That is why double-lock is the only sensible choice on low pitches.
Double-lock standing seam with sealed seams is usable from about 3 degrees, that is a fall of 5 per cent, while 5 to 7 degrees and above is the safe general recommendation. This is the reason low mono-pitch roofs and modern gable roofs with an almost flat slope exist at all: an interlocking tile could never stay watertight at that angle, while a seamed sheet can. Pitch is not the only condition, though. The lower it is, the more rigorously drainage, snow load and every penetration have to be resolved, because water on a shallow roof lingers and looks for a way in.
Which metal is the right one?
Four materials are common in Slovakia, and the difference between them is mainly cost and service life rather than function.

Service life runs from roughly 40 to 80 years depending on the metal and the detailing. The range is that wide because workmanship decides the outcome: the same zinc-titanium lasts decades longer on a well-ventilated roof with freely sliding clips than on one where it has been nailed down solid and left to condense on its underside.
Which details decide whether the roof lasts?
Sheet metal needs a continuous substrate, either full boarding or trapezoidal decking, and on top of it a separating layer that isolates the covering from the deck, drains any condensate and damps the sound of rain. The bays are not fixed directly to the substrate: they are held by clips that let the metal expand and contract with temperature.
- No penetrations in the field of the roof: everything is taken above a seam or through a formed upstand.
- Metals are never mixed so that run-off from one flows onto another, because copper above zinc will dissolve the zinc galvanically.
- Snow guards are clamped to the seams rather than screwed through the covering.
- Every seam that ends at an eaves, ridge or abutment is closed by a formed detail, not by sealant.
Snow guards deserve emphasis on a Slovak roof. Snow slides off smooth metal in one mass, and without guards it will take the gutter with it or damage whatever sits below the eaves, which on a house means the entrance, the terrace or a parked car.
Why must the build-up below the metal be designed?
Sheet metal is absolutely vapour-tight, so moisture that reaches the structure from below has nowhere to diffuse. A standing seam covering therefore belongs either on a ventilated build-up with a through-ventilated air layer under the boarding, or on a warm roof that is airtight and has a demonstrably designed vapour control layer or vapour barrier.
The usual rule that vapour resistance should fall from inside to outside meets a completely closed external layer here, so reliability comes from calculating the build-up rather than from habit. In an attic conversion under an existing metal roof this is the single most important question to answer before any insulation is ordered, and a variable vapour retarder is often the lowest-risk inner layer precisely because the covering above cannot be verified without stripping it.

Neither covering is better in general. The metal roof buys geometry, specifically the shallow pitches and clean edges that contemporary Slovak houses are drawn with, and it pays for that with a build-up that has to be calculated and a repair that is a specialist visit rather than a ladder.
What should be arranged before the roof structure goes up?
The craftsman. Seaming is a sheet-metal trade, and there are markedly fewer contractors in Slovakia who do it well than there are tilers. The difference between a good and an average one shows up ten years later rather than at handover, in the form of a seam that has opened, a bay that has buckled, or condensation on the underside of a deck that was never ventilated.
Booking that contractor belongs in the project schedule, not in the phase when the roof structure is already standing and the trade has to fit around what has been built. The same applies to the decisions that constrain them: the position of every penetration, the falls into the gutters, and the ventilation route under the deck all need to be fixed while they are still lines on a drawing.
