What is a clay roof tile and why is it the Slovak default?

A clay roof tile is a fired clay unit hung on timber battens, and in Slovakia it is the prevailing covering on pitched roofs. The reason is not habit. It is availability, the number of roofers who can lay it well, and the fact that a tiled roof can be repaired locally without touching the rest of the covering.

The material matters as much as the shape. Clay carries its colour in the fired body, so the shade stays stable through decades of weather, and a well-laid roof commonly reaches 50 years and more. Tiles come in interlocking profiles, which use a moulded rebate to shed water sideways, and in plain formats laid in double overlap, which are older, heavier per unit area and need a steeper roof. Whichever profile is chosen, the covering is a system: ridge units, verge units, valley trays and ventilation tiles all belong to the same family, and mixing them is where trouble starts.

What minimum pitch does a clay tile need, and what does the underlay do?

Minimum pitch is not a general value but a figure the manufacturer declares for one specific tile profile. For interlocking profiles it usually falls between 15 and 22 degrees; for plain tiles it starts at around 30 degrees. Manufacturers normally also permit going below the declared figure, on the condition that the layer beneath the tiles is upgraded.

That condition changes the nature of the roof. Below the declared pitch the covering stops being watertight and becomes a layer that only sheds water. The real waterproofing is then the underlay beneath the battens, which has to be specified as a waterproofing layer: taped laps, full boarding where the manufacturer requires it, and water carried right down into the gutter rather than onto the fascia. For a client, one practical conclusion follows. Roof pitch and tile profile are decided together, in the design, and not on site according to what the merchant has in stock.

How does a clay tile differ from a concrete one?

The two coverings are laid the same way, on the same battens, with the same accessories logic, so the differences are entirely in the material.

Neither is a mistake. Clay is the longer-term and more stable choice, concrete is the budget choice with a shorter but perfectly respectable life, and on a house that will be sold in fifteen years the difference in appearance may never show up at all.

What does a tiled roof do to the structure below it?

A load of roughly 40 to 55 kg per square metre passes into rafters, purlins and supports, and it stays there for the life of the building. This is why changing from sheet metal to tiles mid-build is a structural change rather than a change of finish. If the roof is already framed, a structural recalculation is unavoidable, and it usually comes back asking for deeper rafters or an additional purlin.

Rafter depth is also set from the other direction, by the insulation the roof has to hold. STN 73 0540 Part 2 gives a recommended value of 0.15 W/(m²·K) for a roof and a target value of 0.10 W/(m²·K), and in an attic conversion that insulation has to fit between and under members that were sized for load rather than for thickness. Tiles are carried by battens, the battens by counter-battens, and it is the counter-battens that create the ventilated air layer above the underlay. Air has to enter that layer at the eaves and leave at the ridge or it does nothing at all.

Where do the cost and the defects concentrate on a tiled roof?

Not in the field of the roof, which is the part everybody looks at, but in the accessories and the junctions, which is the part nobody prices properly.

  • Ridge tiles and the system ventilation elements at the ridge.
  • Verge and gable tiles and their fixing against wind uplift.
  • Valleys and abutments to chimneys and walls.
  • Roof windows with their flashing kits and the underlay connection beneath them.
  • Snow guards, access tiles and ventilation tiles.

The rule is to use accessories from the same system as the tile. An improvised valley, or a window flashing fabricated on site from offcuts, is the single most common cause of the leaks found when surveying older Slovak roofs. It is also the cheapest thing to get right at the time and the most expensive to correct afterwards, because the correction means lifting the covering back to the defect.

The repairability line in that table is the one worth explaining to a client. On a tiled roof, damage is a local event handled by a single person on a ladder. On a seamed metal roof, the same damage means opening a mechanically closed joint and replacing a whole bay, which is a specialist job with a lead time. That difference does not make either covering wrong, but it does change what maintenance looks like twenty years from now.
