What counts as built-in furniture?
Built-in furniture is joinery made to the exact dimensions of one specific space, fixed to the walls, floor, or ceiling rather than delivered as a freestanding box. In Slovak this is nábytok na mieru (furniture to measure); when the trade rather than the product is meant, the term is stolárske výrobky (joinery products). It includes wardrobes built into a sloped attic wall, a hallway wall of storage that reads as architecture, a kitchen run that wraps a structural column, or a window seat that doubles as a radiator cover. What it is not: a tall wardrobe from a catalogue, or a dining table, however good, that could be picked up and moved to another house.
Where does bespoke joinery actually pay for itself?
Bespoke earns its price where a standard module physically cannot do the job. Awkward geometry is the clearest case: a sloped ceiling in an attic conversion, a reveal beside a chimney breast, a run that has to step around a services riser or a structural beam. A catalogue carcass is built to a rectangle; if the room is not a rectangle, the furniture is wrong or leaves a gap nobody wants to look at. Full-height storage against a sloped roof plane is almost always a joinery job, because only a custom carcass follows the pitch without wasting the triangle of space above head height.

How is built-in furniture different from modular or catalogue furniture?
Modular furniture is designed once by the manufacturer and reproduced at scale; the room has to accommodate the product. Built-in furniture reverses that relationship: the product is drawn to accommodate the room, including its out-of-square walls, its services, and its finishes. That has three consequences. What goes wrong when joinery is ordered too late?
The most common failure is arithmetic nobody does at the right time: a bespoke run has a production lead time, the handover date is fixed, and if the order is placed after the shell is finished rather than while it is being finished, the two dates collide. The house is handed over without its storage, and the family lives out of boxes while the joiner catches up.
