Formwork
Formwork is the temporary mould, made from reusable system panels or site-built timber, that holds fresh concrete in shape until it can carry its own weight.
What is formwork?
Formwork, called debnenie in Slovak, is the temporary mould that holds fresh concrete in the shape the designer drew until the concrete is strong enough to hold that shape on its own. Every in-situ concrete element, a foundation slab edge, a wall, a column, a lintel or a suspended floor, is poured into a formwork skin before it exists as a solid object, with steel reinforcement fixed inside the mould beforehand. Get the formwork wrong and the concrete is wrong too: out of line, out of level, or the wrong shape.
The formwork does three jobs at once: it gives the pour its geometry, it resists the pressure of wet concrete pushing outward, and it forms the surface the finished concrete will show once stripped away. A client rarely thinks about formwork until the finished concrete looks wrong, at which point the formwork is almost always where the explanation lives.
How is system formwork different from traditional formwork?
System formwork is different from traditional formwork mainly in how many times a single panel earns its keep. It is a set of modular panels, usually steel or aluminium framed with a coated plywood or steel face, made to a standard grid and hired or owned as a kit. Traditional formwork is cut, braced and nailed together on site from raw timber and plywood to whatever shape the job needs. Both remain in ordinary use on Slovak sites; the choice depends on the job's geometry and repetition, not on which is better in the abstract.

The practical read for a private client: if the house has long straight runs of wall and repeated floor plates, ask whether the contractor is pricing system formwork, since the saving comes from reuse. If the design has a genuinely irregular shape, a sculpted stair core or a curved wall, traditional formwork may be the only option, and should be priced as the bespoke item it is.
Why is formwork a major cost driver rather than a minor site detail?
Formwork is a major cost driver because it is priced by labour and by how many times a panel can be reused, not by the concrete it shapes. Building, propping, checking and stripping the mould can account for a large share of an element's cost. Repetition, the same wall, column and floor height repeated storey after storey, is what makes concrete economical; one-off geometry is what makes it expensive.
A client should not be surprised that a modest change to a wall thickness ripples through the formwork price even though the concrete volume barely changes. Ask the architect which parts could be standardised without changing how the house looks, because that is where the saving sits.
What does the formwork face do to the finished concrete?
The formwork face acts like a mirror: whatever texture, joint or contamination sits on the panel when the concrete is poured is exactly what shows on the finished surface once stripped. This is the entire subject when a client has asked for fair-faced or architectural concrete, meaning concrete left exposed as the final finish with no render, paint or cladding over it. Every panel joint, tie-rod position, patch of uneven release agent and place where the seal failed and let grout leak out will be visible, and permanent.

None of this is repairable the way a painted wall is. If fair-faced concrete matters, it has to be discussed with the architect and contractor before the panels are ordered, not after the formwork comes off.
When can formwork safely be struck?
Formwork can safely be struck once the concrete has gained enough strength to carry its own weight and whatever load reaches it, and that point is decided by the designer's conditions, the concrete's measured strength gain and the weather, not the crew's schedule. On a wall or column, formwork mainly holds shape and can often come off once the surface will not be damaged. On a suspended slab or beam, formwork and props carry the concrete's entire self-weight until it can span on its own; striking early is not a cosmetic risk, it is a structural event, and a cause of some of the more serious accidents on a concrete site.
Because of this, the striking date and its reasoning belong in the site records. A responsible site manager times striking against the designer's conditions and the concrete's measured strength, adjusted for the weather, and that reasoning is exactly what a client should expect to find in the construction diary, not assumed.
What is insulated or permanent formwork?
Insulated or permanent formwork stays in the wall after the concrete has gained strength, instead of being stripped and reused elsewhere. The blocks are typically hollow rigid-foam units, stacked dry, filled with concrete and reinforcement, and left as permanent insulation on both faces of the wall. Because the mould becomes part of the building, it needs assessing like any insulation layer: where it wraps continuously it can help avoid a thermal bridge, but wherever interrupted, at a slab edge or fixing point, that continuity has to be checked.
What should a client watching a pour actually look for?
A client cannot check formwork engineering, but can expect clean, aligned panels before the pour, not warped or crusted with old concrete, and props substantial for the height being poured. Nobody should strike a suspended slab ahead of the date the site records show. If fair-faced concrete was specified, the panel layout should have been agreed before the pour, not improvised on the day.
None of this replaces the site manager's and designer's judgement, but asking what formwork is being used, and when it can come off, is the right question.

- Usually yes, or it should be. Formwork is largely a labour and equipment cost, driven by how many times panels can be reused, while the concrete itself is priced by volume and strength class. Asking a contractor to break the two apart makes it much easier to see where a design change actually adds cost.
- Can a contractor reuse formwork panels from a previous job?
- System formwork panels are designed for exactly that and are usually hired rather than bought new for one house. Traditional timber formwork can also be reused, but its accuracy and finish degrade with each pour, so a contractor reusing worn timber on a fair-faced element is a fair question to raise.
- Does asking for fair-faced concrete always cost more?

The saving comes from deciding it early, since a fair-faced decision made after the formwork is ordered is far more disruptive.
- Who actually decides when the formwork comes off?

- Is timber formwork a sign of a lower-quality contractor?
