Interior design for a family house of 220 m² in Rusovce, on the southern edge of Bratislava. The brief was for something elegant and timeless, which is easy to say and hard to deliver, because the reliable route to timelessness is subtraction rather than addition. The scheme rests on a muted palette and natural wood: materials that change slowly, tolerate wear as character rather than damage, and do not tie the house to the year it was finished. Choosing restraint at this scale is also a practical decision. A 220 m² house has enough surface that a strong colour or a fashionable finish becomes very present very quickly, and the cost of undoing it later falls on the owner rather than the designer. Wood was used where hands and daylight reach it, which is where a natural material repays the extra cost rather than merely appearing in the specification. A restrained interior is harder to specify than a bold one, because with little pattern or colour to distract, the eye goes to junctions. Where two materials meet, whether a reveal is consistent, how a door frame resolves against a skirting — these become the visible content of the room, and they have to be drawn rather than left to the trade to resolve on site. Natural wood adds its own discipline: it moves with humidity, so gaps and fixings have to allow for it, and finishes differ substantially in how they age and whether they can be repaired locally or only replaced. Choosing a finish that can be sanded and re-oiled in place, rather than one that must be stripped, is the kind of decision that only shows its value years later. Colour temperature of the lighting matters more here than in a bolder scheme, since a muted palette reads very differently under warm and neutral light. Completed in 2018.
