Reconstruction of Hotel Golf in the Low Tatras, including a complete interior design. A mountain hotel with modern amenities throughout.
The reconstruction of Hotel Golf covered 1,800 m² in the Low Tatras and included the complete interior design, which is the harder half of a hotel project. A mountain hotel is used in bursts — full in season, quiet between — and every surface has to survive luggage, boots and constant turnover while still reading as somewhere worth paying to sleep. The guest rooms drove most decisions, since they are what the visitor actually occupies. The gallery shows the range the building had to cover: the general interior, a standard suite bedroom, and an attic suite where the roof geometry sets the room rather than the other way round. Attic rooms are the awkward case in any hotel conversion, and solving them well is usually what decides whether the upper floor earns its keep. Hotels are governed by fire safety before anything else, and in a reconstruction that requirement usually arrives as a set of constraints on an existing plan rather than a blank sheet. Escape route lengths, protected stairwells, door ratings and detection coverage all have to be brought to current standard even where the structure is not being touched, and in an older building the escape strategy frequently decides which rooms can exist at all. Accessibility applies in parallel: a proportion of rooms and the public areas serving them must be usable by guests with reduced mobility, which in a building with level changes is a planning problem rather than a fittings one. Beyond compliance, hotel interiors are specified against a replacement cycle — soft furnishings and finishes in guest rooms are expected to be renewed long before the building is, so the durable layer and the changeable layer are best separated deliberately at the design stage. In a seasonal hotel the quiet months are when maintenance happens, so a building that can be worked on without closing is worth more than one that photographs better. Completed in 2019.
