Rest Area Mníchova Lehota

Design of a motorway service facility – a rest area. An engineering structure with full amenities for drivers and travellers.

A motorway rest area of 450 m² at Mníchova Lehota, designed for NDS, the national motorway company. Roadside service buildings are judged by how well they work under pressure rather than by how they photograph: people arrive tired, stay briefly, and need to find what they came for without instruction. The plan was therefore organised around legibility — a clear route from parking to facilities, sanitary provision sized for peak rather than average demand, and durable surfaces chosen for constant turnover and heavy cleaning. As an engineering structure serving a public network, it also had to satisfy the technical and accessibility requirements attached to motorway infrastructure. Infrastructure work of this type is governed by standards more than by taste, and the design task is to meet them without producing something merely institutional. Maintenance is the honest test: a rest area that is hard to clean, or built from surfaces that scuff and stain, degrades within a season no matter how it looked on opening day. Motorway service buildings answer to the network operator before they answer to anyone else. Layout, signage, lighting levels and the number of sanitary fittings are set against traffic volumes rather than chosen, and the position of the building relative to the slip roads is fixed by traffic engineering that precedes the architecture entirely. Utilities are the recurring difficulty: a site of this kind sits away from settlements, so water supply, wastewater treatment and power often have to be solved locally rather than connected, and the treatment plant that results has its own footprint, access requirement and maintenance regime. Because the facility is open continuously and cleaned on a fixed cycle, durability is specified in terms of what survives a pressure washer and a winter of grit, not what looks best in a sample. The design also has to anticipate periods when nobody is on site, which is why robustness against vandalism tends to shape material choices as much as wear does. Completed in 2016.
