Design of a motorway rest area at Čierne. Comprehensive facilities for drivers and travellers, including sanitary infrastructure.
A motorway rest area of 380 m² at Čierne, in the far north of Slovakia near the Polish and Czech borders, designed for NDS. Facilities on a border-adjacent stretch carry traffic that is often long-distance and international, which raises the demands on the sanitary provision and on signage that has to work for drivers who do not read Slovak. The plan was kept simple and self-explanatory for that reason. Buildings of this type also spend their lives outdoors in a cold, exposed region, so the specification favoured materials that tolerate frost, salt and constant cleaning over anything that merely looks well on delivery. Winter conditions here are the design case, not the exception. Lighting and clear sightlines across the site matter more than they might appear to: a rest area that feels safe to stop at after dark is the one that actually gets used, and drivers on this route arrive at every hour. A facility in the far north of the country is designed against a harder climate than the national average. Snow loads and freeze-thaw cycles set the roof structure and the detailing of every external junction, and frost depth determines how foundations and buried services are laid. Surfaces that hold water will spall once it freezes in them, so falls, drainage and the choice of paving matter more here than they would further south. Winter maintenance is itself a design input: gritting and ploughing have to be possible without damaging kerbs, bollards or planting, and the salt that follows attacks concrete, steel fixings and any timber left within reach of spray. Lighting has to work through long dark hours without glare that blinds a driver rejoining the carriageway. None of this is exotic engineering, but it is the difference between a building that reaches its design life and one that starts needing repairs in year three. Completed in 2015.
